In fact, it’s probably the most common question I get from my students. Many people believe they have failed or aren’t meditating properly because they fall asleep when they sit down to meditate.

So, is it okay to fall asleep during meditation?
Meditation is a natural practice that provides numerous health benefits as well as insights that lead to a more fulfilled and compassionate life. It’s also an effective antidote to the stresses of today’s fast-paced world, which can wear us down and leave us feeling stressed and exhausted. It’s not surprising that taking a break from the daily grind to sit in silence and enjoy the moment may give our bodies and soul the impression that it’s time to rest.
Falling asleep during meditation sessions could also be your body’s attempt to obtain what it is lacking – rest and sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep each night—the Mayo Clinic recommends 7 to 9 hours—it’s natural to fall asleep the moment you get comfortable, feel relaxed, and have your eyes close even for a brief moment. Your body and mind are probably just trying to get the rest it requires.
If you’ve been stressed out or haven’t gotten enough sleep, it’s not surprising if you fall asleep while meditating. In actuality, if you’ve been suffering from insomnia, falling asleep may be beneficial – if you’ve had a restful night, your meditation practice may be more enthusiastic and alive.
