The reason I bring this topic is is because I had the pleasure of hosting a meditation session for The Burdekin Association in Sydney (a non-profit group devoted to helping disadvantaged youth).I was asked to come in because…
It has been very tough for them in the last couple of months…
A lot of the workers have become overwhelmed by the hurt and pain some of the youths had experienced.
One boy CJ - you can check out his full story here.
He had lost everything at a very young age. This is what he had to say:
No wonder! To have your mum, your dad and your home taken from you at a young age is an immense challenge to face. But the Burdekin Association helped instil in him something extraordinarily simple yet effective. It was a real eye-opener for me too and even though I was teaching meditation…
I learned the very valuable lesson of
The Burdekin Association encourages these youths to build routines like…Eating the same amount of meals, around the same time every day…
Sleeping and waking up around the same time every day…
And even having the same amount of showers every week. (doesn’t have to be daily)
You're probably thinking this is relatively basic. How does it make such a big impact?
You see, most of these kids live in uncertainty - which the mind hates.
So having a foundational routine can dramatically increase your overall well-being…
Because your mind now has a predicted time when it knows it’s "safe".
Routines are a form of security.
This is such an important lesson for everyone now as we are currently living in uncertain times.
We don’t know what’s happening, and for the most part, it’s all out of our control.
But for you and me, there are things we can bring under our control in our lives.
Things like:
Being consistent with our meditation practices...
Sharing love and compassion for one another…
Loving ourselves from our soul to our skin... (this might mean a bit of self-pampering here and there too ? )
Or taking part in any form of practice that creates a "safe zone" - a time your mind can relax and take a breath.
By doing this, you will reduce the build-up of stress and anxiety that you pick up going about in your everyday life.
Not only that, but you will also give yourself a solid foundation to move into each day with comfort and ease.
